If you have timber floors with space underneath, cold air moving under the house chills the floor and the rooms above it. Underfloor insulation fitted between the joists keeps that cold out. We install it in homes across Melbourne.
Is underfloor insulation right for your home?
Many older Melbourne homes, such as weatherboards and Californian bungalows, sit on stumps with timber floors and a ventilated space underneath. Those floors can feel cold all winter. Insulating under them makes a noticeable difference to comfort.
It needs enough room under the house for us to get in and work. We'll check the access and clearance when we quote. Homes built on a concrete slab don't have that space, so this service doesn't apply to them.
What we install
We fit batts between the floor joists and hold them in place so they stay put for years, even with air moving underneath. Underfloor spaces commonly take R1.5 to R2.5, depending on the joist depth and the product.
The space under the floor still needs its ventilation, so we insulate the floor itself and leave the vents clear.

Underfloor insulation: common questions
How much space do you need under the floor?+
Enough for an installer to crawl and work comfortably. It varies from home to home, so we'll check when we quote. If the space is too tight, we'll tell you.
Can you insulate under a concrete slab?+
No. Slab floors are insulated during construction, under or at the edge of the slab, which isn't something we can add afterwards. This service is for raised timber floors.
Will it cause damp?+
Not when the space under the house stays ventilated, which is why we keep the vents clear. If there's already a damp problem, it should be fixed before insulating.
